Orcs get a small bonus to eating certain chunks without getting sick meaning that they have even less of an issue with food than other Berserker races, and they are still almost as good as Minotaurs at physical combat, while also getting slightly better EQ slot access. HOBe (Hill Orc Berserker) is my prefered suggestion of race for new players to DCSS. If you cant find food and get hungry, then butcher corpses to eat as a last resort. I still think it's better to sacrifice the corpse than butcher it to fuel those skills. Trog has the magic resistance/regen buff combo and the ability to call companions to fight for you. You're delaying the magic resistance you get from him by eliminating half of your faith points. I'd rather sac the fresh corpse to Trog than butcher it for meat. There are power methods of playing through DCSS, but I'd wager they are based on what version you run.Īs for food, I don't know that I've ever been unable to find regular food to keep me fed except a small handful of times. Takes me forever to get a SS dragonkin it's color at level 7 DOOMRL is also good (based on Doom of course) and I like the levelling there better. I play this often from work as it's a light load on my crappy office computer and easy to save and exit out of. Understanding the ASCII stuff (all the way back from ADOM days) was just something I never adapted to. What I initially liked about DCSS is the tile mode. I'll usually play it to try out the new stuff until I beat it a few times, then put it back on the shelf until next time.įor my money, it's the best RL out there at the moment. I go back to this game every year or so to see what the newest version has changed. The devs actually work on getting rid of the grindy bits of the game to instead focus on the fun parts. The game gets regular updates too which are generally good for both balance and better gameplay. A MIFI (Minotaur Fighter) can be just as effective as a DEFE (Deep Elf Fire Elementalist) but they have 100% different play styles. It has generally good balance in the races and classes (with some obvious 'challenge' versions of both) that actually change the way you play the game, but have similar abilities to navigate the dungeon. In my opinion it is the most fair and challenging without requiring you to memorise the selling price of potions in order to not kill yourself horribly. You need to find our your potion types and which of your scrolls remove curseĭCSS is probably my favorite Roguelike out there. Once you have identify, identify scrolls/potions first. My advice on scrolls/potions, get a big store of scrolls and once you have several different types, use them to figure out which one is identify. The Berserker is awesome early game, but the mages get pretty awesome once you get 10 levels down into the dungeon and they will bitchslap a Berserker before you can close with them. Ummm, I refuse to update my Stone Soup because I have access to Skald Sludge Elfs and I don't want to lose that class/race combo. Different gods have different ways of worshipping them, but once your god loves you enough, they start gifting you with cool items. Hill Orcs start with the same god whether they are Berserker or one of the Knight types (Abyssal, Death, Chaos). Beorgh and Trog like it when you kill anything and sacrifice the corpse. Except Hill Orcs I think? They start with Beorgh (spelling may be off). The minotaur berserker needs to be hitting 'p' over every recently killed corpse to sacrifice it to Trog.įind a diety as soon as you can. Cutting up corpses and eating the meat works well for kobolds (who can eat poisoned meat) and a couple of the other meat eating races that can eat uncooked meat, otherwise raw meat eating is only good when you are hungry and you risk getting poisoned.
